My German online classes are built around one simple principle: You learn a language by using it. From the very first session, you’ll speak German.

Class Format

Choose between personalized one-on-one German instruction or small-group classes with no more than four participants. This format ensures active participation, individual feedback, and faster progress.

All lessons are taught live online, combining flexibility with a high-quality learning experience. Courses are conveniently scheduled in U.S. Eastern Time (EST) and Central Time (CT), so you can learn German from anywhere—on your time.

Friederike is an experienced German language instructor with strong pedagogical expertise and extensive cross-cultural teaching experience.

Dr. Friederike Koenig is a highly accomplished German language educator with a German doctorate and a U.S. master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and world languages. A Goethe-Institute certified instructor, she is recognized for creating high-quality learning environments for diverse learners, including school-age students, university students, adult professionals, and U.S. diplomats preparing for overseas assignments.

Friederike’s teaching portfolio includes appointments at the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, the International Center for Language Studies in Washington, D.C., the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, Georgia State University, and Magnet and Dual Language Immersion programs in Atlanta schools. She has also taught at the German School Atlanta, the German International School in Washington, D.C., and delivered specialized German language training to senior staff at the International Monetary Fund.

Q: What are the benefits of teaching languages online?

Friederike: Online learning has become such a popular alternative to in-person learning because it’s so much more accessible. There’s no commute, you don’t have to carry books or laptops. With online learning, the classroom comes to you—it’s a very focused and productive learning environment without the usual distractions of a traditional classroom. All you need is your computer and a stable internet connection.

Q: Is there a secret to learning a new language?

Friederike: There is no single ‘secret’ but there is a reliable formula that works across languages and learners. Focus on use, not “learning”. Speak early, even if you make mistakes. And build habits—20 to 30 minutes every day beats three hours once a week. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Q: What are the benefits of learning a language?

Friederike: There are so many. Learning a new language improves your memory, focus and problem-solving skills. It enhances communications with international clients and teams. It builds discipline and perseverance. And you’ll certainly have richer travel experiences and more meaningful interactions with locals.

Q: Why learn languages in the age of Google Translate and ChatGPT?

Friederike: They are helpful tools, no doubt. But just remember: A translator gives you content. Learning a new language gives you a new operating system. Trust, nuance and relationships can’t be automated. People open up differently when you speak their language, even imperfectly. No one has ever built deep rapport by saying, “Hold on, let me run this through an app.”
